Little Big Head

A photo taken in 2013 in Chinatown during one of my walk in the area. This shop has been selling props for many years like this "Big Head", commonly seen in lion dancing performances. Way back in the sixties, there was this man who used to peddle such props with all kinds of wooden swords and spears like those used in Street wayangs. As kids we could not afford such luxury and could only watch longingly all the items he had on his tricylcle :)

  1. Yes, I remember seeing such a peddlar in my childhood. During primary school, I think some of the boys made their own big head for lion dance performances. One head lasted many years worn by different students. Heard it was really smelly.

  2. Yes, the self made ones are rather ill fitting and that includes those that are purchased. Its quite common to see the performer holding onto the head with one hand to prevent it from rotating, while holding a fan with the other. Fortunately you just heard about it :)
