Some past Christmas photos I took. This was in Chinatown Smith Street just before Christmas, in 2017. There was this plastic figure of Santa, as if welcoming visitors to the Street food hawker stalls. A favourite place for oldies like us who come here to stroll and savor the wide range of hawker food. In time past this was a market, I remember the many vegetable stalls here.
I always like Smith Street, whether it be Christmas or Chinese New Year. It's the hustle and bustle there that's quite unlike elsewhere. I do remember it when it was lined on both sides with stalls selling vegetables etc, live snakes, eels....
ReplyDeleteYes, me too :) Come here at least once a week. The atmosphere is especially nostalgic for oldies like me. One of our relative used to live at Smith street, she had a vegetable stall nearby. My mum used to bring me along to visit her, remember walking up those dark and dank staircases to reach her unit. Each floor was partitioned into smaller units to accommodate the many families staying here :) Yes, I remember the live snakes and eels stall too, it was rather gruesome to watch the stallholder killing the snake. He just stood on the tail end of it and start pulling, all the guts started to spill out. Nightmarish definitely :(
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed. Though I don't really like snakes, I felt really sorry for them...
DeleteCould not bear to watch, even though I was just a small boy, it occurred to me it should be more humanely treated.
ReplyDeleteActually even now I feel very sorry for the frogs at some restaurants. They are so plump and cute but they are all squashed into a small tank, waiting to be slaughtered😕
ReplyDeleteThat's why I hardly if ever, eat such things :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you!
