CNY 2020 Celebration

The shutter bug in me overcame the fear of coming to crowded places. After all it's the most important festival in the Chinese almanac. It was about a week before the Chinese New Year, came to soak in the colorful sights and sound. At the same time to buy some decorations for the home plus my favorite pineapple tarts. As red is an auspicious color, many of the souvenir shops carried a huge variety of paper cuttings like this. Definitely the customers are spoilt for choices. The fun is in going from shop to shop and selecting the one that catches the eye.

Here at Pagoda street it was not that crowded as there was still a week before the CNY. It was the best time to come as there was space to take photos without obstructing others. The weather too was favourable not too humid compared to the blazing hot afternoons. I like this photo, where everyone seems to be walking in the same direction :)

Looking up, the colorful banner and lanterns
in contrast to the dark sky adds to the mood here in Chinatown. The shop houses with it's western influence arches and windows are architectural gems. Tons of books written about them. There are even hand painted figurines of these on sale in the market.

The main lantern display for the year of the rat stands at the junction of New Bridge road and Eu Tong Sen road to add to your photo album. The year passed by so quickly, it was like yesterday when I was at this spot for the year of the Pig :)

  1. Haha, so you went after all 😁 Actually I was tempted to, but was scared of the crowds.

  2. Actually, I was a bit apprehensive too. Went a few times in the day without any health issues. Got braver and went to to "River HongBao" at Marina Bay as well :)

  3. Did you go to the River Hong Bao in the night? We passed by during the day, it was so hot and hardly any activities. Evenings should be better with shows, colourful lights and fireworks☺
