Short trip to Penang - 5

Behind the Chendol store is this rustic wall and I thought it might make an interesting photo. There was a lull in business and the store helper took a breather from the brisk sales. There are no tables or chairs for the customers and we stood to finish our "chendols" on the street. Just like old times :)

Soon there was another queue forming at the Chendol stall after we were about to leave. Took one last shot from the opposite stall selling knick-knacks and we were on the way again.

Some design of the shop-houses look liked those that are found in Geylang.

Passed by two roadside stalls, one selling "侯栗 " or fried Chesnuts the other steamed peanuts. Gave the later a try, it has been a long time since I last tried it.

Another shop had longish durain cakes wrapped in plastic sheet that I was looking for. Strangely the bigger shops selling confectioneries near our hotel does not have these. It reminded me of a shop near Arab street that sold these types of durain cakes. It was a luxury way back in the sixties to buy one by my mum and she had to cut it in small pieces for the whole family. One of the itinerary in our trip to Penang was a durain feast promised by one of our friends, so I just bought one roll to try. Should have bought more as I found out it tasted just like those we had in the sixties. The "Tam Chiak" (greedy) me, needless to say, finished the whole row in two sittings fending off any would-be competitors with a growl...

  1. My mum cut up the stick of durian cake for us too! Then the remaining half would be stored in the fridge. Haven't eaten it since I became an adult ☺

  2. Should try it again, it's quite yummy, rather sweet. Don't forget to floss teeth thereafter. It gets between the teeth :)
